Google unveiled Gemini 1.5 Flash during its Google I/O 2024 event in May this year.

Google said then that the reason for developing Gemini 1.5 Flash was because developers needed a model that was lighter and less expensive than the Gemini 1.5 Pro which was announced in February. It added that Gemini 1.5 Flash was optimised for fast, high-volume, high-frequency tasks at scale and is more cost-efficient to use.

In a blog post, Amar Subramanya, Vice President, Engineering, Gemini Experiences at Google said that with the introduction of Gemini 1.5 Flash to the free Gemini tier on both web and mobile, it could be used in more than 40 languages and over 230 countries and territories.

With the inclusion of Gemini 1.5 Flash, users can have longer conversations with Gemini thanks to an expanded context window, and ask it more complex questions and receive noticeably faster responses, especially Google added, improvements in reasoning and image understanding.

To really get the most out of the larger context window, Google will be adding the ability to upload files via Google Drive or directly from your device. This means you’ll be able to do things like upload your economics study guide and ask Gemini to create practice questions. Gemini will also soon be able to analyse data files for you, allowing you to uncover insights and visualise them through Gemini created charts and graphics.

To reduce AI hallucinations (where an AI model perceives patterns or objects that are non-existent, creating a response that it nonsensical or inaccurate) Google will be displaying related links to content not just online, but in your Gmail app too if you have the Gemini app extension for Gmail.
