Google could be shutting down Hangouts for consumers in the next two years.
According to 9to5Google, a source familiar with the product's internal roadmap claims that Google will be shutting down Hangouts for consumers sometime in 2020. At the moment, Google Hangouts is still the primary chat option in Gmail and the app is available for download on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
While Hangouts for consumers is likely to be axed, Hangouts as a brand will continue to exist with the G Suite's Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet. Both are intended for enterprise use as team communication platforms.
The rumored shutting down of Hangouts could be part of Google's major revamp of its messaging app stratgegy; it halted development of Allo in April to focus on the Android Messages app.
