Google Duo may be eventually replaced by Google Meet.
Sources familiar with the matter told 9to5Google that Google plans to have only one video calling app. The decision was reportedy made by G Suite head Javier Soltero as he felt that it doesn't make sense for Duo and Meet to co-exist.
The new direction and reduced interest in building a dedicated consumer-centric service came as a surpise to the Duo team. Some team members are either reassigned to help with Meet enterprise development or have already left the company. The transition is said to take up to two years and development plans could change. At this moment, Google wants to kill Duo and push users to Meet.
In response to 9to5Google's report, Google says it has “no plans to interrupt” current usage of Duo with its current timeline, and will “invest in building new Duo features". It added that it is “looking at ways that our video calling products can improve alongside one another”.
