At Google I/O 2024, the company announced plans to make your TV even smarter by bringing Android 14 and Gemini to new TVs and existing ones compatible to receive updates.

According to the company, users will see improvements in performance, accessibility, multitasking, and the discovery of new content.

In the developers blog Google’s said that Android 14 for TV improves on previous OS versions so users get a snappier, more responsive TV experience. It has also added new energy modes to reduce a TV’s standby power consumption.

Under accessibility, Google has added new features including colour correction, enhanced text options, and improved navigation for users, which can all be toggled on or off using remote shortcuts.

Multitasking has been added in the form of support for Picture-in-picture mode on qualified Android 14 TV models.

With the addition of Gemini, Google TV helps you discover content faster with AI-based recommendations. “So you can spend more time watching and less time searching,” Menaka Shroff, the Senior Director of Global Android Product Marketing said in a post.

You’ll receive AI-generated descriptions on the home screen, personalised for you based on your genre and actor preferences. AI-generated descriptions will also fill in missing or untranslated descriptions for movies and shows so you don’t have to guess what the show is about.

No time frame was given for the rollout but we hope it will be soon.
