Last year, Google introduced Immersive View to Google Maps, letting users explore a city with extreme detail and check out areas of interest from their phones. This year, Google has expanded this feature further by introducing journey preview with Immersive View at Google I/O 2023.

Immersive View now extends its capabilities to Google Maps’ routing feature, allowing users to preview their real-life route in the same extreme detail you would get from Immersive View. This lets users visualise their route even before they set foot on it, which is great for drivers, cyclists, and even pedestrians trying to navigate a new area.

According to Google, journey preview is possible via the computer vision collected by Google Maps. Google’s AI capabilities fuse billions of Street View imagery with aerial photos to create a rich “model” of the city. You can view the route from multiple dimensions and angles, check for minor obstacles, and even simulate rainy weather to see if still useable under adverse conditions.

Immersive View For Routes (journey preview) begins its rollout to Google Maps across 15 cities around the world before going further: Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Paris, Seattle, San Francisco, San Jose, Tokyo, and Venice.
