At Google I/O 2023, the company unveiled a number of announcements around AI, especially around Duet AI and how Google plans to use it to make the user experience of Google Workspace and Google Cloud better.

Duet AI and Google Workspace

March saw the launch of generative AI features in Gmail and Google Docs to testers, with AI-powered grammar, spell check, smart compose and reply. Google is now adding AI-powered features to Gmail, Slides, Sheets, Google Meet, and Docs.

AI power even on the move

Gmail on your phone is getting AI-powered to help you draft complete responses with just a few words as a prompt or to create professional replies that automatically fill in names and other relevant information thanks to contextual assistance.

Generate better images for Slides

Google is embedding Duet AI into Slides so users can generate images with a few words. They can create image models from something they can visualise that has never existed before and can create original images from text, right within Google Slides.

Better data organisation in Sheets

Analyse and act on your data faster with Duet AI’s automated data classification and ability to create custom plans. The new classification tools understand the context of data in a cell and can assign a label to it, helping eliminate the burden of manual data entry saving time and effort in developing a clear and visually engaging analysis.

Google has included a new help me organise capability in Sheets that automatically creates custom plans for tasks, projects, or any activity that you want to track or manage. Simply describe what you’re trying to accomplish, and Sheets generates a plan that helps you get organised.

Express your uniqueness with Meet

With Duet AI and Meet, users can create unique backgrounds for their video calls. This allows them to express themselves while still protecting their privacy.

Smart canvas makes things easier in Docs

Duet AI and smart canvas are being integrated into Docs to assist in writing. For example, suppose you're writing a job description. In that case, Duet AI will not only help you write the content, it will also include smart chips for information like location and status, and variables for details you’d want to customise like your company name — helping you go from concept to completion faster without ever leaving your document.

Besides multi-language support for neural models for grammar, Docs now has the capability to help with proofreading, tone, and writing style.

Google has opened Workspace Labs to hundreds of thousands of trusted testers since March who have been involved in trying the new generative AI features in Gmail and Google Docs. Unfortunately, there is no timeframe as to when Google plans to roll them out to all users.

Code assistance provides AI-driven code assistance for cloud users such as application developers and data engineers. It gives code recommendations as they type in real-time, generates full functions and code blocks, and identifies vulnerabilities and errors in the code while suggesting fixes.

Chat assistance gives answers

Chat assistance allows people to use simple natural language to get answers on specific development or cloud-related questions. Users can engage chat assistance to get real-time guidance on various topics, such as how to use certain cloud services, or functions, or get detailed implementation plans for their cloud projects. It can also provide architectural or coding best practices, helping to reduce the need to go searching for relevant documents.

Duet AI for AppSheet makes things simple

Duet AI for AppSheet will let users create intelligent business applications,  connect their data, and build workflows into Google Workspace via natural language.  With no coding required, users will be able to build apps by describing their needs in a chat guided by AI-powered prompts. This makes app creation accessible to more users, which can allow developer teams to focus their time on other high-impact work.

These early features of Duet AI for Google Cloud are available today for limited users and Google says that they will be expanding access very soon. Sign up here to join Google Cloud’s AI Trusted Tester Program.
