Facebook wants to be the go-to site for breaking news with its updated search function

Looking for breaking news? Facebook wants to be the go-to site for its subscribers with its updated search function. More details after the jump.

Facebook has announced updates to its search function. According to the company, it handles over 1.5 billion searches daily, and has over 2 trillion posts on its index! It’s only natural that Facebook fine-tunes its search functions to meet the ever-growing needs of its subscribers. As a result, the company is rolling out the following updates to its search function

  • Better search suggestions - up-to-date and timely suggestions that are based on current events will be pushed out to the user
  • Search results with public posts and posts from friends - When the user searches, recent, relevant posts from friends and public posts will be highlighted. Facebook claims these results will be organized to cut through clutter. To make sure the posts are updated, the user can use the pull-to-refresh feature
  • Find public conversations with search - this feature is a work-in-progress, and it allows interested users to jump headfirst into a widely-shared link. This link will center on an ongoing public conservation and the user can see public posts about this link, as well as the “popular quotes and phrases mentioned in these posts….”

Currently, the updates are rolling out to US English users on their iPhones, Android and desktop systems. For more information, do check out Facebook’s official statement here.
