ChatGPT has received a boost to its memory, helping it remember all of your past chats to provide more personalised responses, so it can be “more useful”.

When memory is enabled, it can remember useful information that you’ve shared across conversations, like your name, preferences, or how you like your responses, so you don’t need to repeat yourself. Memory features are being rolled out gradually and may not yet be available to everyone.

To check if memory is enabled in ChatGPT:

  • Click on your name or the three dots in the bottom-left corner of the ChatGPT app or web interface. If you’ve already opted out of memory in the past, you'll automatically be opted out of referencing past chats.
  • Select Settings.
  • Go to the Personalisation or Memory tab (depending on the version).
  • You’ll see whether Memory is turned on or off, and you can view or manage what’s remembered.

By doing so, Open AI says that it can provide more personalised responses, to make it even more helpful for writing, getting advice, learning, and more. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a Twitter post:

This is a surprisingly great feature imo, and it points at something we are excited about: AI systems that get to know you over your life, and become extremely useful and personalized.

According to ChatGPT, you’re in full control of what it remembers. For those with any privacy concerns, you can:

  • View what’s currently remembered.
  • Delete individual memory items.
  • Turn memory on or off at any time.
  • Clear all memories with a single click.
