If you’re an Adobe Creative Cloud (CC) subscriber and installed an update on your Mac last week, you might be in for a nasty surprise.
A bug in version 3.5.0.206 of Creative Cloud appears to be deleting user data on the Mac without asking or letting the user know about it. This seems to happen whenever a Mac user logs into the Adobe CC after installing the update.
According to Backblaze, Adobe CC will delete the alphabetically first folder in a Mac’s root directory. Backblaze users were especially affected, because the service stores data in a root folder named ‘.bzvol.’
The ‘.’ at the beginning of the name made it the first most folder in most users’ directories. Backblaze has published instructions on how to fix the problem for affected users.
For non-Backblaze users, the bug will delete the alphabetically first folder, whether it’s hidden or not. If you updated Adobe CC but aren’t sure whether your data was deleted, you can do a check against an earlier Time Machine backup (if you have one).
Once it was notified of the bug, Adobe pulled the update from distribution. It has since updated the release with a fix for the problem.
