Pixelmator said in a blog post that it has signed an agreement to be acquired by Apple. The company is behind the popular photo-editing app Pixelmator Pro. It also develops Pixelmator for iOS and Photomator.
While the acquisition is still subject to regulatory approval, pending regulatory approval, Pixelmator confirms "there will be no material changes" to the apps that it makes at this time.
Moving forward, Pixelmator says the Apple acquisition will give it "the ability to reach an even wider audience and make an even bigger impact on the lives of creative people around the world".
Pixelmator was founded 17 years ago and it's notable because its apps are largely built using Apple-specific technologies like CoreML and Metal.
Pixelmator Pro was one of the first photo-editing apps to make use of the Neural Engines in Apple Silicon and machine learning to improve processes like image resizing.
It will be interesting to see how this acquisition pans out. Will Apple keep Pixelmator as a separate app or will it incorporate some elements of it into its own Photos app? Only time will tell.
