Acronis announces Acronis Access Connect, a cross-platform file access solution

Acronis has unveiled Acronis Access Connect, a cross-platform file access solution that aims to help businesses and enterprises integrate Macs seamlessly into Windows environments and enable workers to access files on-the-go from a variety of mobile devices.

Acronis has announced Acronis Access Connect, a file- and print-sharing solution targeted at small-and-medium businesses and enterprises. Formerly known as ExtremeZ-IP, Acronis Access Connect is a cross-platform offering that enables access to files from Apple, Android and Windows devices.

As a nod towards the inexorable drive towards greater mobility, Acronis Access Connect brings broad support for workers to access files on-the-go with their iOS, Android or Windows phones and tablets. It also supports both Windows PCs and Macs, thus enabling employees to use their own personal devices at work and helping IT departments to deliver a better file server access and print-sharing experience for workers.

As more and more workplaces embrace Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) policies, demand for cross-platform file-sharing solutions like this is likely going to grow. This also means that more and more iOS devices and Macs are going to make their way into offices, which poses a challenge to IT departments when it comes to ensuring file-sharing compatibility and performance across multiple devices, platforms and OSes.

According to Acronis, it aims to address this by allowing Mac users to continue to use key features like Time Machine when connecting to Windows or Network-Attached Storage (NAS) file servers. The hope is that Mac users will no longer have to suffer a poor user experience (file corruption, file permissions and application incompatibilities are just some of the issues) just because they are coming from a different OS. Instead, Acronis Access Connect has focused on removing the protocol bugs, performance issues and compatibility problems that are usually associated with integrating Macs into a Windows environment.

This ties in with the proliferation of cloud services intended to facilitate convenient access to data any time, anywhere, and from a range of devices. Acronis Access Connect thus serves to lower the hardware barriers to enable a more seamless file-sharing experience and moves in step with a more flexible and mobile workforce by ensuring compatibility with both Mac, Windows and mobile devices.
