150 million MyFitnessPal accounts affected in major data breach

If you're using MyFitnessPal, it is recommended that you change your password immediately.

Under Armour, which acquired MyFitnessPal in 2015, revealed that as many as 150 million accounts were affected in a significant data breach.

User names, email addresses and hashed passwords were said to be stolen, but not the financial information (e.g. credit card numbers) and government identifiers (e.g. social security numbers).

The data breach occurred sometime in February, but Under Armour was made aware of the breach last week. It has since been working to inform affected users, and will work with the police and data security firms to investigate the data breach.

“Four days after learning of the issue, the company began notifying the MyFitnessPal community via email and through in-app messaging. The notice contains recommendations for MyFitnessPal users regarding account security steps they can take to help protect their information,” Under Armour said in a statement. “The company will be requiring MyFitnessPal users to change their passwords and is urging users to do so immediately.”
