With the rollout of its latest software versions yesterday, Apple also published a new support page detailing both the importance of keeping your devices updated and the temporary impacts.

Why software updates matter

  • New features: Updates offer the latest tools and enhancements to your device, which boost productivity, enable new ways to communicate, and maximise overall functionality.
  • App innovations: Developers are given new capabilities to integrate into their apps, allowing you to enjoy the latest innovations on your favourite apps.
  • Security: Critical security patches and bug fixes are delivered to your device to protect against malware, viruses, and other cybersecurity threats.

Temporary impacts on battery and performance

Apple notes that users may notice a temporary impact on battery life and thermal performance after installing an update. This is due to the additional time required by the device to complete the setup process in the background, such as indexing data, downloading new assets, and updating apps.

Additionally, new features may require more system resources, which can cause minor performance and/or battery life dips, depending on how you use your device.

The latest software updates introduce a unified design language across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS, for a seamless and consistent experience. You can download them for free on your device via Settings > General > Software Update.
