OpenAI has released a major new update to ChatGPT, transforming the chatbot from a conversational AI into a full-fledged digital assistant that can directly interact with popular apps. Announced during its annual Dev Day 2025 conference, the new system introduces “apps inside ChatGPT,” enabling users to access and control third-party services such as Spotify, Canva, Booking.com , Expedia, Coursera, Figma, and Zillo without leaving the chat.

Apps within ChatGPT can appear naturally during a conversation or be summoned directly by name. For example, users can type a prompt like “Create an upbeat playlist for my workout on Spotify,” and ChatGPT will open Spotify inside the chat, allowing them to preview and refine the playlist. Similarly, users can ask Canva to “design an Instagram post about the Singapore Grand Prix 2025,” or use Expedia and Booking.com to find hotels and flights in real time. In essence, the goal is to make common online tasks faster and more intuitive by combining conversational AI with interactive app experiences.

Powering this new system is OpenAI’s Apps SDK, which is now available for developers to preview and test. In the months ahead, the company expects to see an expanding range of app integrations from food delivery and fitness tools to productivity and finance services, allowing users to complete more tasks seamlessly through a single prompt.

Naturally, some users may have concerns about privacy and safety. The company claims that “these remain central to the rollout,” and that every app inside ChatGPT must comply with strict data and usage standards. Developers are “required to provide clear privacy policies, collect only the data necessary for functionality, and be transparent about permissions.”

When users connect an app for the first time, ChatGPT prompts them to review what information will be shared. Later this year, OpenAI plans to introduce even finer privacy controls, allowing users to manage which specific data categories each app can access for personalisation.

Availability and access

The update begins rolling out today for all logged-in ChatGPT users on the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans outside the European Union. To try an app, simply call it by name or allow ChatGPT to suggest one when appropriate. The first time you use an app, ChatGPT will prompt you to connect your account and review what data may be shared.

As for the near future, the company has plans to expand app access to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu users. The company will also launch a public app directory, where users can browse, search, and discover new integrations. Apps that meet “higher standards of design and functionality” will be featured more prominently within both the directory and conversations.

Finally, OpenAI has also teased upcoming app integrations, including Uber, DoorDash, TripAdvisor, Target, and more. For more information, readers can check out the official announcement from OpenAI here
