Synaptics' new fingerprint sensor can scan through glass up to 1mm thick
Synaptics just announced a new optical fingerprint sensor that is capable of high resolution scanning through 1mm of full cover glass.

Synaptics, the company which developed discrete touch controller solutions to bring 3D Touch-like features to Android smartphones, just announced a new optical fingerprint sensor that can scan through 1mm of full cover glass.
Known as the Synaptics FS9100, the optical fingerprint sensor is designed to be placed under the cover glass (including 2.5D glass) in the front, bottom bezel of mobile devices.
Besides being scratchproof and waterproof, the company also claims that the FS9100 fingerprint sensor works with wet fingers. The FS9100 optical fingerprint sensors are currently scheduled for sampling in early 2017 with mass production in Q2.
The FS9100 is not the first fingerprint sensor to be able to scan through glass; Qualcomm's Sense ID technology can detect fingerprints through glass, metal and other surfaces. Sonavation's ultrasound biometric sensor can be integrated with Corning Gorilla Glass and LG Innotek's fingerprint sensor can be placed within a 0.01-inches (0.3mm) space on the underside of the cover glass display.
