Remember queuing up at a check-out line in a supermarket and hearing the beep of items being scanned by the barcode reader? It's a pretty common sight, but taking it to another level are scientists who have found a way to use it to identify zebras. All that's needed is a photograph and a program is able to give each animal a distinct code based on the patterns of their hindquarters. In fact, they may even extend the system to other animals like tigers...
msnbc.com - A team of computer scientists and biologists have developed a barcode-like scanning system called Stripespotter that automatically identifies individual zebras from a single photograph. The system is more accurate than other image-recognition programs and could be used on additional animals with stripes, such as tigers and giraffes.
