PSA: Remember to claim your free 6-month Data Shield package when you buy an eligible device at Comex 2016

A data protection and recovery service, Data Shield comprises of data backup using Acronis Data Backup, and a data recovery service by Seagate. You can claim a free 6-month basic plan if you buy a laptop or desktop PC, smartphone, or tablet from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and MSI at Comex 2016.

In case you missed it, Comex 2016 is back this week at Suntec Singapore. If you’re looking for deals to be had, remember to check out our mega deals article here. Our Tech Show Portal is also up and running, and here’s where you can find all the flyers from the various vendors.

Now, if you’re going to “hoot” a new laptop or monitor, what are you going to do with the old one? So here’s the thing: PC Dreams - who’s in charge of trade-in services in past Comex, IT and PC Shows - is back again to handle Comex 2016’s trade-in process. Besides laptops, you can also trade-in tablets and pre-built desktops. PC Dreams also accept TVs and monitors.

There are some restrictions though. For one, PC Dreams doesn’t accept custom-built PCs, as well as laptops using single-core processors. And for TVs and monitors, they must be using LCD and are above 18.5 inches in screen size. Suffice to say, the older your device, the lesser it’ll fetch at the trade-in. Also, devices that have been tampered with or are damaged are ineligible.

Of course, the whole purpose of doing the trade-in is to get some moola. Successful trade-ins will earn you cash vouchers that you can use at any retailer at the showfloor. In addition, regardless of the value or brand of your traded device, you’ll also receive complimentary vouchers from Kaspersky, Lenovo, and Samsung.

Like past trade-in events, this year’s process still requires you to fill up a form first to get a quote. And if you’re happy with the quote, you can bring your device and drop it off any day between the 8th and 11th at Suntec Convention Hall 603.

Free Data Shield protection

Also, don’t rush home after you’ve bought your new gadget at Comex. Especially for those who’ve bought a laptop or desktop PC, smartphone, or tablet from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and MSI, remember to claim your free 6-month Data Shield basic package at Level 4 Tech Showcase T6. (Note: only 1,000 redemptions per day.)

Offered by the Digital Hospital (the service arm of PC Dreams), Data Shield is in a nutshell a data protection and recovery service. It comprises of up to 50GB data backup using Acronis Data Backup, and a data recovery service by Seagate. So say you’re unable to access or read the data from your device (because accidents do happen), this free 6-month basic package entitles you to a one-time call on Digital Hospital. Digital Hospital will attempt to recover the data using a logical data recovery method using the Seagate Data Recovery protocols and processes. If the usual data recovery method doesn’t work out (maybe the device is severely damaged), Digital Hospital is also able to offer a more advanced physical data recovery process at a discounted rate.

Expectedly, you can also sign up for a longer-term protection with Digital Hospital. At Comex, you can get a 1-year plan for S$19.90 (with free S$20 service voucher) or a 3-year plan for S$39.90 (with free S$40 service voucher). These two Advanced and Premium plans also come with free advanced data recovery.

SSD and RAM upgrade service

Bought a solid-state drive or memory module for your PC but don’t know how to open up your device to install it? Well, SSD and RAM upgrade is another service offered by Digital Hospital at Comex 2016. And if you were to buy the Samsung Evo 750 120GB SSD (S$59), this upgrade service is provided for free; else, it’s a one-time fee of S$40. In addition to the physical installation, the folks at Digital Hospital will clone the data from the existing storage to the new SSD. For the RAM upgrade service, the fee is S$10. More details of this service can be found at the bottom of this page.
