Intel and major automotive leaders have published a new automated driving framework

Intel and 10 automotive industry leaders have published “Safety First for Automated Driving,” a framework for the design, development, verification and validation of safe automated passenger vehicles (AVs).”

The framework lays out 12 guiding principles of automated driving that autonomous vehicles should adhere to, as well as the “steps necessary to realize them.” Most of the principles underscore the importance of the role of vehicle operator and the autonomous system of the operating vehicle.

The framework seeks to state explicitly the responsibilities of the vehicle operator and the autonomous system. There’s also a security principle that reminds the manufacturer of the vehicle to guarantee the safety of the autonomous system from security hacks.

The framework stops short of regulatory enforcement as the companies behind this self-regulatory initiative aren’t able to force autonomous vehicle manufacturers to adopt any of the principles.
