Google released its findings from its commissioned report on the usage, attitudes, and economic potential of generative AI today (15 January 2025).

Titled “Our Life with AI: From innovation to application” 2024 (PDF here), Ipsos surveyed 21,043 adults across 21 countries (including Singapore, of which they had 1,000) between 17 September and 8 October 2024.

This is the second time Google has conducted an AI Outlook survey (the first was in 2023), so it also produced some trends data.

Being chronically kaypoh (Hokkien for “busybody”) meant we examined Singapore-specific data more closely.

As seen in the impossibly small text below, these findings answer the question whether residents of these countries think that "people like them" will benefit from AI. The higher the bar, the more likely they believe in the benefits. Image: Google.

Of the sample of 1,000 Singaporeans, they said:

  • In 2024, 59% of Singapore residents used generative AI, up from 49% in 2023. This includes using generative AI at work and in school.

Of those people, 75% said they use AI at work for

    Enhancing writing (81%)
    Brainstorming (81%)
    Problem-solving (76%)

  • 72% of Singapore residents believe AI benefits them personally, up from 67% in 2023.

  • 81% are “excited” with AI simplifying online information access.

  • 72% are drawn to its potential as a personal tutor.

  • Singaporeans mirror the APAC optimism of GenAI, with 58% who said they are excited about AI’s potential. 42% are concerned about the risks AI poses.

  • Singaporeans slightly prefer AI-driven advancements in science and medicine (54%) over more regulatory restrictions that disrupt AI (46%).

  • About 72% also expect AI to positively impact science and medicine, with 63% believing it affects agriculture and 59% thinking it’s promising for cybersecurity.

  • 78% said they are confident that the effort from Singapore’s government will use AI for economic benefits.

Interestingly, Singapore residents aren’t very different from the global surveyed sample. As mentioned in Google's blog post, 74% of AI users also use it at work.
