Google Cardboard is now compatible with Street View

Google Cardboard might not be the first thing that comes to mind when somebody says 'virtual reality headset' but it is, hands-down, the cheapest way to experience VR content on mobile devices. Sure, the new Samsung Gear VR is quite cheap too at US$99, but unless you have a recent Samsung phone, it's worthless to you.

While Google Cardboard might not have the backing of Oculus VR like the Samsung Gear VR does, it does have some notable apps like Titans of Space. Of course, not everybody is interested in space, which is why today's much more terrestrial update should please.

Google's just announced that Cardboard is now fully compatible with Street View. This means that you can finally use the headset while exploring around in Google's Street View. Of course, Street View itself isn't in true 3D, so you'll still be looking at the same type of picture quality you'd get viewing Street View normally.

If you're itching to try Google Cardboard but don't want to buy a cheap looking cardboard box, you can get a View-Master Cardboard viewer instead. Not only does it have the nostalgia factor (if you owned one of the old school View-Masters that is) going for it, you can even get new View-Master reels that deliver VR content specifically made for the device. On top of that, you can also use it as a generic Cardboard headset.

Of course, VR support isn't the only thing that Google's done for Cardboard. The company's also updated and improved on the SDK,with better Unity performance and drift correction.

With premium VR headsets like the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift coming in the next few months, it's nice to see that Google's still supporting their Cardboard fans and developers with patches and improvements instead of calling it a day in the face of incredible competition.
