CrucialTec's new fingerprint sensor tech makes the Apple's Touch ID look huge

With fingerprint sensors appearing on more mobile devices, manufacturers are racing against one another (1) (2) to develop more innovative ways to implement them. One company has announced a breakthrough, which is optical track pad maker CrucialTec.
According to Korean publication ETNews, CrucialTec's CEO announced last week that the company has developed a new micro-surface area fingerprint recognition algorithm "Muon" with a minimum recognition surface of 8mm2.
When placed in a fingerprint sensor, Muon can read fingerprints on a surface area as small as 18.72mm2 (5.2 x 3.6mm). In comparison, the fingerprint sensors found on the LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P have a surface area of 64mm2 (8.0 x 8.0mm).
Current fingerprint recognition modules require more space as they have to meet the minimum surface area required for existing algorithm to read the fingerprints. With CrucialTec's Muon, more compact fingerprint sensors can be placed anywhere on the mobile device which will result in better screen-to-body ratios.
