Apple could be using OLED displays on future iPads and MacBooks
Does this also mean higher prices?

The rumor mill says that future iPads and MacBooks could feature OLED displays.
This is because Apple has committed to order a number of OLED displays from Samsung. However, slow sales of the newest iPhones mean that Apple ordered few displays than anticipated, which means a fine on Apple's part to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars.
Rather than paying the fine, Apple is offering to take up OLED display orders for other products to make up for the difference.
If true, there's a good chance the rumored 16.5-inch MacBook Pro will feature an OLED display. There's been a lot of talk about how the 16.5-inch MacBook Pro will come in the body of a 15-inch notebook and OLED displays will go a long way in making that possible due to the ability to accommodate thinner bezels, which in turn means a small overall footprint.
OLED displays could also be used on future iPad models too, which makes sense since the goal of the iPad was always to be just "a piece of glass" that could do anything. Again, OLED displays could mean smaller bezels and smaller overall size.
Size aside, OLED displays also have the benefit of better picture quality and lower power consumption.
The downside, however, is price. OLED displays have typically cost more than their LCD counterparts so let's hope that if this rumor is true, it won't lead to drastically higher prices for future MacBooks and iPads.
