Apple announced plans to expand its research and development labs in China.
In a statement to the South China Morning Post, Apple says it is expanding the research lab in Shanghai to "support all of its product lines". In addition, the company plans to open a new lab in Shenzhen later this year.
The upcoming lab in Shenzhen will augment testing and research capabilities for the iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro. Additionally, and crucially, it will also help Apple improve collaboration with local suppliers.
Despite reports of Apple moving production out of China, its latest plans appear to signal the company's commitment to increase capital spending in the country.
It also comes at a critical point where iPhone sales reportedly declined 24% year on year due to increased competition and lower consumer spending. Huawei is primed for a big comeback in 2024. Its goal is to double shipment by shipping between 60 and 70 million phones this year.
