The top 7 Back to the Future collectibles for any true fan
So you think you're the ultimate Back to the Future fan? We've compiled a list of the top 7 must-have collectibles every Back to the Future fan needs to have.
Great Scott! Has it really been 30 years since the original movie first came out?
It’s Back to the Future Day and what better way to show your love for BTTF than by buying lots and lots of licensed merchandise? Here’s a list of the top BTTF collectibles any fan can spend their hard earned money on. Now excuse us while we do some shopping of our own ...
1. Nike Mag
It looks garish and kind of tacky but we don't care. We'd wear this with pride!
Okay, this pair of Nike kicks don’t actually have the power laces technology, but for sheer looks alone, the Nike Mag shoes can’t be beat. They’re official and look exactly as they did onscreen. The problem is getting your hands on them.
To date, there are only 1,510 pairs of Nike Mags in existence, and all of them have been sold to collectors the world over, with prices ranging from US$2,300 to US$9,959 when the shoes were on auction. That’s right, these shoes were never sold in stores. Instead, they were only sold through special online auctions, with proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
You can get cheaper ones (without the Nike brand) at Halloween Costumes if you don't want to mortgage your house.
2. Mr Fusion Home Energy Reactor replica
Remember, it's just a replica. While you can open up the hatch and chuck in egg shells, banana peels and beer, it won’t actually power anything.
Apart from the DeLorean and the hoverboards, one of the most iconic gadgets from the movie was the Mr Fusion Home Energy Reactor. While one of the original movie’s plot points was getting supplying the 1.21 jigawatts needed to power the Flux Capacitor, the second movie deftly provided a solution for the machine’s tremendous energy requirements with the Mr Fusion Home Energy Reactor.
While the replica doesn’t have the smoke effects that the movie Mr Fusion has, it does have the signature sound that plays whenever the unit is unlatched, and tilts back just like the movie prop. Of course, like all movie replicas, it takes a special person (read: massive disposal income) to get one of these, since they’re retailing for US$349 online.
3. Your very own floating hoverboard
Take your pick. Think Marty's hoverboard is too girly? Prefer Griff's macho Pitbull board instead? Kids Logic has you covered.
These hoverboards are just a fraction of the price you’d pay for a hoverboard from Lexus or Hendo. There are replicas not only of Marty’s hoverboard, but also of Griff and his gang’s boards. If you’ve always wanted to own a Pitbull, this is your chance.
It all sounds great doesn’t it? The catch is that these boards are just a 1:6 scale of the hoverboards you see in the movie. So unless you’re Ant-Man or have a working shrink ray, you probably won’t be riding these boards anywhere.
Floating on a special magnetic base, the boards can steadily hover in place. Alternatively, you can also put a scaled down DeLorean (also by Kids Logic) to see it hover above the base too. Pre-orders are open at Kids Logic's Facebook page.
4. A Flux Capacitor replica
The flux capacitor is what makes time travel possible, and now you can own your very own. Get a large replica from Diamond Select for US$395 (eek!) or a smaller, flux capacitor USB car charger from Think Geek for a more affordable US$24.99. Time travel abilities not included!
5. Back to the Future Trilogy vinyl box set
A collector's set for the audiophile in you.
Loved the tunes Marty rocked to in Back to the Future? Well now you can get the soundtrack for the entire trilogy in vinyl, remastered from the original master recordings under the supervision of composer Alan Silvestri.
The 6XLP vinyl box set comes designed as a plutonium case, and each album cover features artwork inspired by the flame trails from when the DeLorean jumps in time.
Each record is pressed on 180 gram colored vinyl, and comes in a deluxe gatefold jacket. Some of the never-before-released music from the sequels have also been included, and screenwriter Bob Gale contributes exclusive liner notes for the box set, making this a true collector’s item.
6. Back to the Future : The Complete Adventures (Blu-ray & DVD)
Gotta love the flux capacitor in the packaging.
Yes, it’s yet another Back to the Future Blu-ray Trilogy release, but what makes this release stand out from all the others before it is the fact that it includes not only the three main films (obviously), but all new original shorts, including Doc Brown Saves the World! starring Christopher Llyod, Looking Back to the Future: A 9-part documentary from 2009 on the trilogy, as well as the complete animated series, Back to the Future: A Visual History 64-page book, all wrapped up in a collectible light-up flux capacitor package.
Universal has already posted a teaser of Doc Brown saves the World! starring Christopher Llyod. Check it out!
7. Back to the Future Monopoly
Who doesn't love a game of Monopoly?
Everybody knows the game Monopoly right? It’s been played countless time over the years in different versions, but how many of you have played a Back to the Future version of the game? Buy up properties in Hill Valley and collect iconic locations from all three movies like the 1885 Clock Tower, Doc's Mansion from 1955, and the McFly Residence from 2015.
If you ask us, the best thing about the set is the special BTTF tokens. Why be a ship or hat when you can be a DeLorean or Hoverboard? Zip down Hill Valley and travel through time as you pick up properties to be the ultimate property tycoon.
