CeBIT 2009 - Part 4

In part 4 of our CeBIT coverage, we cover BenQ, Chieftec, Geil, Enermax, Enlight, Fujitsu Siemens, Hyunjin, JSP-Tech, Miracube, Shuttle and Seagate.

BenQ's Booth

BenQ had two new highlights to showcase at their booth. The first is this yet-to-be-named 24-inch environment-friendly monitor. It uses LED backlighting, sports a resolution of 1920x1080, 5ms response time, 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and a 1000:1 static contrast ratio, 250 lumens brightness and dual HDMI connectors. Even the panel's casing design is not finalized, so expect it to change when it's made public in a few months time.

The other was this LED Pocket Projector P1. Though not as pocket-able as the a few really handy ones we've seen, this might actually fair better in the quality output as from what we noticed during its video playback.

This is however the really interesting chassis a DIY all-in-one PC, right down to even the monitor. You'll see later that Enlight has a more elegant version of this concept and is more ready to release to market. However, this model from Chieftec is completely DIY-able. You name a component, and you can configure it.

Here's another view from the rear and as you can see, it can take in a completely normal ATX sized innards. You can even put in any PSU of your choice. Bare in mind though, the case is still a prototype and will take a while before the design finalized and reaches production. Perhaps by Computex time frame.

This chassis by Chieftec will take in any LCD that is compatible with wall mounting. So all you need to do then is to mount it on this system. As you can see the mounting arm on the chassis is both pivot friendly and height-adjustable.

Geil's Booth

Geil's Booth. Though memory is their specialty, there wasn't anything really new to note but we did catch other cool stuff.

Surprisingly, a big part of their focus besides power supplies, were actually fans!

Surprisingly, a big part of their focus besides power supplies, were actually fans!

These are their new Apollo casing fans (ignore the Everest and Cluster fan labels which are not shown in this photo). The Apollo is the most expensive of their casing fans and it incorporates three great features. Firstly, the fan blades and frame bear a new metallic coating for the sparkling finish and offers corrosion protection. Secondly, the fan uses Twister bearing technology (a nano magnetic design, more on this later) for extremely long life span and detachable blades for easy cleaning. Last but not least, the cool lighting you see - Enermax calls it Apollo lighting effect and it is really better than any LED lighting effect we've seen to date. There are 12 LED lights in total per fan.

Enlight had a couple of really interesting casings that would stir some interest amongst the DIY crowd.

This is the LPA-20 and it's not another usual all-in-one PC as this one is completely configurable as it takes in any standard components! How's that for a DIY AIO PC? And it looks really nice too. LPA-20 is just a shell that comes with a 20-inch WSXGA+ LCD screen (1000:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time) with stereo speakers. They even have a touch-screen option.

Just unlatch the rear to access the internals which is yet again hidden by another metal shield. The plastic exterior hides all the unsightly cables away. Inside, the system can take in any microATX motherboard and you can configure it as you please (it accepts up to four low-profile expansion cards). The system itself comes with the LCD screen, a 300W PSU (which is also a standard easily replaceable model) and a card reader. So basically, you buy the pretty shell and fill it in with your goodies.

This is the other interesting model. If you thought this is a mini-ITX chassis, you would be forgiven since it is of that size - but it can take in a microATX motherboard!

Here's how it is on the inside. Takes in four low-profile cards, one 5.25-inch device and dual 3.5-inch devices (one external and internal each). Measures 350 x 94 x370mm.

Recently, Fujitsu Siemens launched their new Amilo Desktop LA 3415 Green Edition that is much more energy efficient and environmentally friendly than previously.

In fact it's so 'green' that it has been certified for the latest Energy Star 4.0 rating, Blue Angel eco-label (low noise emission) and the Nordic Swan eco-label (environmentally conscious through entire life-cycle).

Ever thought a 0-watt PC is possible? Well Fujitsu Siemens pulled it off with their business desktop Esprimo E7935 and P7935 machines. Of course that's during the off-state and in hibernation state. This is achievement exceeds the requirements by the EU law that requires standby-mode energy to be 0.5 watts or less by the year 2013. Every watt saved in every machine will easily add up to big savings when you look at things from a macro scale (think large companies). Kudos to Fujitsu Siemens. This machine should be available from summer of this year.

Miracube, a Korean company, specializes in 3D displays.

They've a variety of panel sizes for 3D purposes. These shown here are 32-inch and 46-inch screens. Miracube mentioned that the panels themselves are obtained from Samsung, but they apply the special layers and the electronics to enable the 3D display. In fact, they've a toggle to disable the 3D stereoscopic effect, in which case you see a normal output.

This demo here however, is a prototype of a 46-inch screen that is able to display 3D output without the user requiring to wear 3D glasses! And no joke, it works great, though it requires a stricter sweet spot. Miracube is test driving this first before mass production in future after checking their customer response. They do however have much smaller screens of 17-inch and 19-inch sizes that can also output 3D without requiring glasses. However for precision work such as in the medical industry, it is recommend to work with screens that require wearing glasses for more accuracy.

Hyunjin, JSP-Tech and Seagate Booths

Korean company Hyunjin had this interesting VOIP video phone under the Fimca brand that acts as an entertainment and multimedia station as well. Equipped with USB , LAN, WAN, multi-card reader, AV in/out and even HDMI ports we bet you have a good idea of its networking and entertainment capabilities. It's huge 7-inch touch screen (800 x 480) handles internet video and audio pretty fluidly and did we mention it doubles up as a digital photo frame as well as able to surf the Internet?

JSP-Tech had this interesting display of Wall PCs under the Ezcool branding. It's not much besides a slim case mounted on the wall, but just naming and selling them as such, is sure to garner them some business just for trying to be different. Of course, we doubt the idea is practical in our opinion.

They also have PSUs, and this is their top-end modular 880W power supply and had huge DIN connectors. Interesting and weird.

Seagate didn't have much during CeBIT 2009, but we did manage to spot the Seagate FreeAgent Theatre that was introduced in CES this year. It acts as a docking station with some of their new portable FreeAgent drives and acts as a media station. Supports up to 1080i output and 5.1-channel audio output. Not as impressive as some other media stations/players.
