9 DeLorean Time Machines you can actually own
We can’t all be Doc Brown and build a time machine out of a car. But thanks to Back to the Future loot, we can all own a DeLorean DMC-12 Time Machine of our own in some way.
“If you’re gonna build a time machine out of a car, why not do it with some style?”
Hey, we can’t all be Doc Brown and make a time machine out of a fancy car. But thanks to Back to the Future loot, we can all own a DeLorean DMC-12 Time Machine of our own in some way … time travel not included.
Here are nine of our favorites, with both affordable and outrageously expensive DeLoreans to fit all budgets:
1. Hot Toys 1/6th Scale DeLorean Time Machine (plus Marty McFly)
Hot Toys makes awesome replicas, so we’re not surprised that their 1/6th scale DeLorean Time Machine looks pretty cool too. Not included is a 1/6th scale Marty McFly replica that Hot Toys also makes, which looks uncannily like Michael J. Fox, and complements the car perfectly. But be warned: like other Hot Toys replicas, the DeLorean Time Machine comes with an eye-watering price tag, with pre-orders at S$880.
2. Sun Star 1:18 Die cast DeLorean Time Machine
Alright, so Hot Toys’ DeLorean is pretty cool, but it’s the version from the beginning of BTFF I. What if you’re partial to the flying DeLorean version with the iconic Mr. Fusion? Also, Hot Toys’ is not die cast!
If you’re going to get a replica of a car you love, you’ve got to get it in die cast metal. Welly makes a swell die cast DeLorean with Mr. Fusion (in fact, they make all three versions of the DeLorean), but the wheels don’t flip up. Diamond Select has a DeLorean with wheels that flip up, but it’s not die cast.
Well, that’s where Sun Star’s 1:18 DeLorean comes in, it’s both die cast and the wheels flip up, just like in the movie.
3. Kaiyodo DeLorean Time Machine
Japanese toymaker Kaiyodo is known more for its Revoltech line of figures, but the very first in its Movie Revo line is the DeLorean Time Machine from BTTF II. Measuring about 160mm (approx. 6 inches), it’s the perfect DeLorean for smaller spaces, and it even mounts on a stand with flaming wheels.
4. Kids Logic Magnetic Floating DeLorean Time Machine
Okay, but how about a DeLorean Time Machine that actually floats in the air? Kids Logic’s 1/20th scale model of the DeLorean uses magnets to keep it hovering in place. It also comes with LED lights that light up, as well as a price tag that will light up a hole in your wallet (pre-orders are starting at S$270).

5. LEGO DeLorean Time Machine
This is as close to building your own DeLorean Time Machine as it gets. The Lego DeLorean even has opening gull-wing doors and fold-up wheels, as well as cute little Lego versions of Marty McFly and Doc Brown. The set comes with parts for all three movie versions, so you can build the exact movie DeLorean you love.
6. Bandai DeLorean iPhone 6 case
If you’re a) a BTTF fan and b) own a iPhone 6, then you have the perfect combination for this DeLorean iPhone 6 case from Bandai. The blue LED lights actually light up when you get a call, just like how the DeLorean’s lit up just before it went traveling in time.
You can actually slide out the hood to reveal the iPhone’s camera, and open up the car’s sides to access the volume controls, as well as flip up the wheels for the full BTTF experience.
7. DeLorean Time Machine GTA mods
If you actually want to drive around in a DeLorean Time Machine but don’t have the cash to buy one (hey, who does), the next best thing is the DeLorean Time Machine mods for the Grand Theft Auto games. There’s a mod for GTA IV and a 3-pack mod for GTA V, with all three movie versions. There’s even a time circuits mod that (sort of) lets you travel in time through the GTA world.
8. A real DeLorean DMC-12
Okay, we’ve covered DeLorean replicas, but how about getting the real thing? The original DeLorean Motor Company folded in the 80s, but in the 90s, British entrepreneur revived the DeLorean Motor Company name, acquired the rights to the “DMC” logo as well as the remaining inventory of the original DMC. The company now sells pre-owned and ‘new’ DeLoreans for sale. You can even get the Time Machine version to drive around in … if you have the cash to buy one, ship it in and pay for the COE.
(There actually used to be a DeLorean driving around in Singapore, which had been spotted from time to time. Not sure if it’s still on the roads now, but it sure was amazing to see it.)
Updated: Turns out the DeLorean is still zipping around in Singapore, with a COE till 2020! Burn Pavement has a nice photo-story on the car. Special thanks to Garage 36 for the tip.
9. OUTATIME: Saving the original DeLorean Time Machine documentary
Have your heart set on an actual DeLorean Time Machine, and not just any DeLorean, but the actual DeLorean from the movie?
Well, you’ll probably never own it, but this is the closest to getting it as you can. While BTTF’s legacy has grown through the years, the DeLorean Time Machine was sadly left to rust. OUTATIME: Saving the DeLorean Time Machine is the story of how Bob Gale (BTTF producer), Universal Studios and a group of fans banded together to restore the DeLorean to its original beauty.
The documentary is available on Blu-ray, as a digital download, and also comes as a bonus in the new Back to the Future 30th Anniversary Trilogy Blu-ray box set.
