HWZ’s year in review: What you bought in 2023

While we frequently share what made it into your shopping carts throughout the year in our What Readers Bought series, it’s nice to take a step back and look at the big picture to see what bigger trends were at play during the year.

As numbers nerds here at HardwareZone, we crunched the data to uncover the bestsellers of 2023, where you shopped, which sale days were the most popular, and any surprise buys you loved. Keep scrolling for a review of how you shopped in 2023.

Bestsellers of the year

While certain items may trend every month according to the season (e.g. dehumidifiers were super popular during rainy seasons), a few items and categories were perennial favourites throughout the year.

As more of us started travelling and moving around again, we saw a rise in Apple AirTag sales, especially in the first half of the year. Readers always made sure to stock up on the Ugreen Nexode 100W multi-charger, MicroSD cards and SSDs whenever they went on sale at any time of the year.

Another category readers loved were wireless earbuds, notably the Apple AirPods (2nd Gen), which constantly topped the bestseller list as prices started dropping this year.

Lego sets are always a favourite with readers, and the Lego Orchid building set swiped the top spot this year. It really came into its own as a Valentine’s Day present, and picked up again in sales as we moved closer to the Christmas period.

Below are some of the bestsellers throughout the year based on the number of items bought.

Surprise bestseller of the year

Scentsational Tobacco and Vanilla Natural Soy Candle

While tech and electronics are expected buys from our readers, we were pleasantly surprised to see this pop up.

Made from essential oils and natural soy wax, this candle is scented with elements of strong tobacco leaves and Madagascar vanilla. It’s a scent that's not overly feminine, and works well to help mask the smell of other odours.

Thermos Mug with Lid

The market is awash with many insulated tumblers and mugs from Stanley to HydroFlask, but one emerged as the winner this year. This Thermos mug is made of stainless steel with vacuum insulation technology, and will keep drinks hot or cold for up to 12 hours.

What were the most popular new releases of the year?

There were plenty of phone launches this year, but the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra was the phone of choice for our readers at its launch in Feb 2023. We also saw unprecedented discounts on this phone over the 11.11 and Black Friday sales, which kept it firmly in place as the most popular phone with HardwareZone readers this year.

News of a slim PS5 launching in October also created a buzz, and we saw sales of the new unit crop up. Prices started dropping on the regular PS5 console, so we also saw sales on the console and games pick up at this time too.

Where did you shop online the most in 2023?

No surprises here. Online marketplaces Amazon, Lazada and Shopee topped the leaderboard as your favourite places to shop. You also liked shopping at Robinsons for home, bedding and other electronics gadgets.

For electronics, Samsung and Apple were your preferred destinations for phones and smartwatches, Casetify one of the go-to places for phone case and device holders, and Lenovo a favourite for laptops.

What was the most popular day for shopping this year?

You may be expecting Black Friday to be the busiest day for shopping in 2023, but it was 11 July, the first day of Amazon Prime Day that HardwareZone readers were adding the most deals to cart in the year. This was followed closely by 11.11 and Black Friday for the next busiest shopping days.

What were the most bought items on the busiest shopping day?

The Ugreen Nexode 100W charger took the top spot on this day, thanks to its ability to fast-charge multiple devices at the same time.

Amazon devices are always discounted to their lowest prices during the Prime Day sales, so readers took full advantage to stock up on the Kindle and Echo Dot.

With Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for Nintendo Switch being released in June this year, we saw sales top the charts on the game when it was available on offer on Prime Day.

And finally, parents also used the Prime Day sale to pick up these SmartyPants multivitamin gummies for their children. Containing beta carotene, vitamin B6 and K2 and flavoured with lemon, orange and strawberry, they ensured kids were getting the right levels of nutrition without fuss.
