The latest camera from Blackmagic Design is the Pocket Cinema camera 4K that was launched just in July 2018. As the name implies, it gives you full production camera capabilities in a 'much smaller' DSLR-style format. It retails for S$1,845 and comes with a full copy of DaVinci Resolve 15 Studio (worth S$429).

As you can see, the camera is slightly wider than your usual ILC (interchangeable lens camera). The body is actually made of space-age carbon fiber polycarbonate composite; an extremely strong but light material that has some leeway to take knocks and drops.

On the right, you'll find a sizable grip. You’ll also note multiple movie record buttons and a separate button to capture still images (the one with the camera icon). There are also multiple shortcut buttons above that for quick adjustments to your ISO, shutter angle, or white balance settings.

On the left, you get a full range of connectors so you can hook up additional accessories for use while filming. Note the mini-XLR audio connector which gives 48V of phantom power and the USB-C port, the latter of which lets you record directly to an external SSD.

Up top, you’ll find a row of custom function buttons. You’ll probably also note that a screw mount point is provided instead of the usual hot shoe mount, this saves you from needing an extra mount adaptor as most external monitors and lights use 1/4-inch screws.

At the rear, the camera boasts a large 5-inch Full HD resolution touchscreen. This allows for easy menu access and is great for reviewing footage captured, with both highlight peaking and audio monitoring available at a glance.

Of course, the menu system itself is very different from the usual ILC menus. The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K uses the same OS as the URSA Mini, so you’ll get options for LUTs (lookup tables) as well as additional audio settings.

Internal storage options include CFast and SD card, so there’s a total of three types of media you can record to when you factor in external storage drive option. Note the storage needs - 870MB can only record about 16 minutes of 4K DCI footage!
