An all-aluminum notebook build isn’t anything new, but MSI’s version of a classy looking 14-inch ultraportable makes a concerted effort to appeal to a wide audience with just the right feel and specs. Meet the Prestige PS42 that was just unveiled at Computex 2018.
The Prestige PS42 has a brushed aluminum finish inside and out.
At just 1.19kg, the Prestige PS42 may not be as light as LG’s Gram, but we can assure you that it’s plenty light for a 14-inch ultraportable and yet it feels sturdy thanks to its aluminum frame. This is quite unlike the Gram’s flimsy feel (despite being able to withstand a great force).
The notebook can open to 180 degrees flat, so it’s quite accommodative to how you want to use it, be it for collaborative purposes or just getting the right position for personal use. You’ll also not have to worry about your kid accidentally forcing the lid open all the way flat. And yes, the fingerprint sensor integrated into the corner of the trackpad is Windows Hello compatible for quick and fast biometric login.
Within its ultrathin 15.9mm body, you get an Intel 8th Generation Core processor that can go up to a Core i7 variant and has a GeForce MX150 discrete graphics to accelerate certain work and video workflows and even allowing users to indulge in light gaming. This combination is quite sought after and we’re glad MSI took notice of preferences of enthusiasts looking for an ultraportable notebook.
Sporting a slim bezel design and an all-aluminum body, the Prestige PS42 flaunts it naturally in a brushed aluminum finish with a slight nod to an industrial look.
The left profile hosts a full-size HDMI port, USB Type-C port, headphones-out jack and LED status indicators.
On the right, there's even a full-sized SD card reader along with another USB Type-C port and two USB 3.0 Type-A ports. Vey few notebooks these days sport an SD card reader, so this gets our nod for making it convenient for photographers on the go, along with a mix of USB port types so that you don’t need to lug around converters and such.
