Nokia World 2009: Booklet 3G and N900 Previewed

Nokia N900

Nokia N900

Those of you who have been following up with the previous Internet Tablets such as the Nokia N800 and N810 will find the N900 a familiar sight. Sporting the Linux-based Maemo 5 operating system, the N900 is hyped to be alongside Google's Android to rival Apple's iPhone OS. The proof is in its accompanying hardware with an ARM Cortex A8 600MHz processor powering the Linux-based Maemo OS.

Unlike the earlier tablets, the N900 is a full-fledged cellular device for calls and data downloads with its HSDPA (or 3.5G network) speeds of up to 10Mbps. This means you won't have to tether to a separate mobile phone to make cellular calls like its predecessors.

Like the recently launched Nokia N97, the N900 has the potential to achieve 48GB worth of storage. This is, of course, through the combination of its internal 32GB storage, and an expandable memory of up to 16GB. Given its status as an internet device and a multimedia heavyweight, the extra memory will do you good.

Over at Nokia World, the N900 has just been given a price point of 500 euros before subsidy. By estimation, this would place it on the same price point as most of its flagship devices; and rightly so, since Nokia has announced the N900 as its new flagship model for the year.

A 3.5-inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixels in resolution) touch screen display is great for web browsing and movies. It also makes navigation much easier with the expansive screen real estate here.

Camera functionality has been bumped up with a 5-megapixel sensor and dual-LED flash.

One of the key features of the N900 is its ability to run applications in the background. And with the units on display, it seems up to par in terms of performance, thanks to its ARM-Cortex processor.

The physical QWERTY keyboard, as seen here is slightly raised. This will slightly improve the tactile feed of the keyboard, but the keys are still too close for comfort.

The 3.5mm audio jack located with the key lock button at the side is now a common sight amongst the latest Nokia devices.
