Navigator & Classic
A Classical Navigator
At last year's Nokia World, it was announced that an upcoming update to Nokia's mapping software, Nokia Maps, would be made. Of course, we expected something else on the hardware front coming right up to accompany that, and that took place today with the launch of the 6710 Navigator. Tagging the Navigator brand to this device certainly leaves you with no room for doubt on its biggest feature.
The new Nokia 6710 Navigator will, as you might have surmised, be bundled with the latest Nokia Maps 3.0. What you might be able to expect out of the updated Maps 3.0 are added features such as high-resolution aerial images, 3D landmarks and most of all, real-time traffic info integrated into the navigation software.
Capitalizing on its integrated compass, the 6710 Navigator will also come with the previously introduced Drive and Walk navigation modes, and of course, the one touch access Navigator key. But beyond the device approach, there's also Ovi Maps to look out for. Essentially, you can plan out your journey on the Ovi Maps site which can be synchronized to the device.
Now, for multimedia purposes, we see an updated 5-megapixel camera sensor on this new Navigator device. Thankfully, the 3.5mm audio jack will be prevalent amongst the refreshed Nokia lineup, as seen on the 6710 Navigator too. Internet access is also not left out here, with both Wi-Fi and HSDPA available for high speed data transmission.
And, the Classic series hasn't been left out either. The new Nokia 6720 Classic will be up for grabs by the second quarter of 2009, which isn't really that far off, give or take before the end of June. Sporting a 5-megapixel camera with dual LED flash, the 6720 Classic will also come with Nokia Maps 3.0 on top of its GPS with A-GPS features.
Similar to its earlier Classic series, HSDPA is a given data connection option, and also the only one seeing as how Wi-Fi connectivity is not found on the 6720 Classic. However, this device with a 2.2-inch QVGA display does also come with its own integrated compass, much like the 6710 Navigator. Entertainment value is pretty good on this device too, with the inclusion of N-Gage, Ovi Share, and a 3.5mm audio jack to go along with your music collection. Sounds good overall, but the similarity in features between the 6710 Navigator and the 6720 Classic might give some folks a little trouble to actually make a clear choice.
