Icing on the Iceborne cake: A Q&A with Monster Hunter World's developers

Icing on the Iceborne cake: A Q&A with Monster Hunter World's developers

Producer Ryozo Tsujimura and executive director Kaname Fujioka were in town to talk about Capcom's Monster Hunter WorldIceborne, the monstrously anticipated expansion launching on consoles next moth. Needless to say, we thoroughly enjoyed the new stuff they had to show — check out our event coverage!

Naturally, what media preview would be complete without a Q&A session? After all, an expansion this hefty is bound to raise a ton of questions. Although we would have liked to secure a 1-on-1 session, time proved to be of the essence. Instead, the two veteran developers answered what they could press-con style.

Note: Responses have been edited for length and clarity.

Let’s start off with something simple. Can you disclose the number of new monsters that will be included in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne?

A: Unfortunately, we can’t reveal the exact number, but rest assured we’ve got much more than those three monsters you saw earlier in the demo!

Will there be any changes to the game with regards to difficulty?

A: As of now, we aren’t looking to change any of the difficulty tiers since they appear to be doing okay. That being said, we will step in if the situation calls for it.

Will there be new weapon types introduced in Iceborne?

A: Nope. However, we will be introducing new skills for existing ones. Speaking of new things, in addition to more extensive customisation for Your Room, we are also considering more Palico customisation options, but cannot promise anything at this point.

With regards to competitions, is there any possibility of the Monster Hunter Championships returning, at least to Southeast Asia?

A: Hmm… we can’t say for sure, but we at Capcom definitely had a blast inviting the players down for the past events.

Will we be able to play as a Palico like in Monster Hunter Generations?

A: Hahahaha! That's a great question! Although we know many players enjoyed that, there’s still nothing for that in the pipeline as of now – sorry guys!

The last question is also one of the most important. Monster Hunter World saw a ton of awesome crossover events with series like The Witcher. Will there be more of those when Iceborne drops?

A: No comments on that now, but we would like to have some in future. *winks*

They sure enjoy leaving us on the edge; we may have just ended up with more questions than answers! Not that we're surprised, of course, as they probably wouldn't want to reveal too much between the recent demo and upcoming launch.

That said, we appreciate and thank Tsujimura-san and Fujioka-san for taking time off to personally entertain our questions in Singapore

With that said, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne drops on 6 Sep for PS4 and Xbox One (Jan 2020 for PC), Do you know which edition to get?
