At the behest of my significant other, I have taken to audio books. In particular, ones that are available for loan from the National Library, Singapore via Overdrive mobile app. I managed to listen to “When Breath Becomes Air”, by the late Paul Kalanthi.
I shan’t go into the details of this autobiography, but suffice to say, near the end of book, Paul said, “I’m ready.”
I wasn’t; I replayed that chapter’s audio clip again, and again, to let the gravitas of his dying moments take hold. After a while, I stopped, breathed deeply, and Dylan Thomas’ poem, “Do not go gentle into that good night” came to mind.
To me, a mere mortal, it evinces the Welsh poet’s attempt to make sense of death, and as Paul wrote, “The fact of death is unsettling. Yet there is no other way to live.”
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at the close of the day.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Thomas, Dylan (1951). Do not go gentle into that good night. Italy: Botteghe Oscure
