Hundreds queue up across Singapore for the Apple iPhone XS and XS Max launch

Apple Store Orchard Road

Over 800 people queued up at Apple's Orchard Road Apple Store in anticipation of the launch of Apple's newest iPhones, the iPhone XS and XS Max.

Singaporean, Daniel Lee, was the first customer to get his hands on the new iPhones, purchasing two 512GB gold iPhone XS Max units, which he says he will be giving to his relatives. Lee didn't have to queue up as he had pre-ordered the phones on Apple's website, and only showed up shortly after 7AM this morning.

Meanwhile, for those that didn't pre-order, the queue was much longer. Some, like Le Van Thang, had been waiting since 7AM Thursday morning. Thang, who came to Singapore from Vietnam specifically for the iPhone launch, was one of the first customers to buy the new iPhones, also picking up two 512GB gold iPhone XS Max devices, one for himself, and one for a friend.

Singtel held its launch for the iPhone XS and XS Max at its flagship Singtel Comcentre Shop at Exeter Road, just minutes away from the Apple Store.

A long queue of Singtel customers formed around the Singtel flagship store hours before the shop opened.

First in line was Mr K. A. Ng, who had queued since 5.30am to get his hands on his new gold iPhone XS Max before heading off to work.

“Singtel has provided top notch service to me over the years and the booking process for the iPhone this time round has been really smooth,” said Mr Ng, who has been a Singtel customer for more than 20 years. “I’m excited to be the first to purchase the new iPhone XS Max and I love its gorgeous new Gold color and advanced camera capabilities.”

StarHub did not have a central launch for the latest iPhones (although you can still collect your iPhone at designated collection centres). Instead, StarHub made express deliveries directly to customer's homes. One customer, Edwin Sim, who has been a multi-service StarHub customer since 2000 (the year StarHub launched), was greeted by StarHub CEO, Peter Kaliaropoulos, who personally delivered an iPhone XS Max to Sim, as well as a pair of BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore Racquet Club passes worth $4,288.

Sim, who was expecting a regular delivery, said, “What a pleasant surprise I got when StarHub’s top honcho Mr Peter K turned up on my doorstep. I have been with StarHub since the second day of its launch, and today’s experience is indeed one to remember. Thank you, Team StarHub!”

Lazada also started selling the new iPhones at 8AM this morning. As of 10AM, all storage variants of the Gold iPhone XS Max are currently sold out, as well as the 512GB Silver iPhone XS Max, the 256GB and 512GB Space Gray iPhone XS, and the 512GB Silver iPhone XS.

Rekha Nallamothu, purchased an iPhone XS Max at 8AM, and had it delivered to her house just 25 minutes later. According to Lazada, her delivery left the Lazada warehouse just three minutes after she placed her order.

“I couldn’t wait to get the new iPhone but I didn’t want to queue overnight either. My entire family loves iPhones, especially my husband. I bought the iPhone XS Max for him and he’s so excited, because he got it faster than his friends,” said Mrs. Nallamothu.

M1 held its launch at its Paragon flagship store. Mr Tan Haoping, was the first customer to collect his gold iPhone XS Max from the store. As a token of appreciation, he also received a small gift hamper.

M1 also awarded the first 150 customers to collect their phones a go at its Lucky Capsule Machine with sure-win prizes.
