Honor 20 Pro: First looks at Honor's latest flagship

Hands-on with the Honor 20 Pro

After much build-up, the Honor 20 Pro has finally been released! This Honor 20 Pro is the flagship for the Honor 20 series, and like the 20 Lite we wrote previously, it comes with a brand-new rear surface design. Honor calls this "Dynamic Holographic Design" and it's a very reflective surface that has subtle changes in color depending how the light hits it.

The 20 Pro features a 6.26-inch, 2340 x 1080-pixel all-view display (at 412 PPI) capable of 16.7 million colors, and has a 91.6% screen-to-body ratio. It runs on Honor's Magic UI 2.1.0, and is powered by a Kirin 980 AI chipset with Dual-NPU, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of internal storage.

As you can see, the fingerprint sensor is on the side of the phone. We're told the location was specially selected so it complements the natural placement of fingers when you pick up the phone, and it's certainly wide enough for your finger to fit over. There's just a single USB-C port and no audio jack, so you'll need wireless or USB-C headphones. However, the built-in speakers are supposed to be able to provide virtual 9.1 surround sound for a better gaming experience.

The pinhole-style front camera is a 32MP f/2.0 selfie camera with 3D Portrait Lighting, so that should give you more-than-decent selfies even in dim light. Apparently it also automatically applies skin smoothing based on your age and gender.

On the back you get a 48MP AI Quad camera consisting of a 48MP f/1.4 main camera (1/2" Sony IMX586 sensor like the Oppo Reno), a 16MP f/2.2 super wide-angle camera with 117o field of view, an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto camera, and a 2MP f/2.4 macro camera for extreme close-ups. This last camera lets you get up to 4cm close to your subject, so you can really get into the details. In a nut, the camera can do 3x optical zoom, 5x hybrid zoom, and 30x digital zoom.

Given that Honor is a sub-brand under Huawei, it's no surprise that the camera app looks very similar, with a full range of options under the "More" tab. Note also the pink/purple AI logo on the camera app - that indicates the activation of the AI camera features, which basically adds scene recognition (in this picture it thinks the EXIT sign is the moon) and automatically applies the appropriate settings for the best image.

All in, the Honor 20 Pro is a handsome-looking smartphone with a full-featured camera app. We're told the 4,000mAh battery is good for a full day's use, but there's also a quick charge feature (Honor SuperCharge) that gives you 50% charge in just 30 minutes.

Local pricing and availability information for the Honor 20 Pro is not yet available (it's going for €599 in Europe), but we'll be sure to update this piece once it's released.
