Close-up: Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 in pictures

Let's take a look at the new Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20.

1/17

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro will be the first flagship device to use the new 7nm Kirin 980 chipset. It will feature 6GB RAM, 128GB storage and will ship with Android 9.0 along with an updated EMUI 9 interface.

The Mate 20 Pro is 157.8 (H) x 72.3 (L) x 8.6 (W) mm, and weighs 189g.

The Mate 20 Pro features a 6.39-inch, 3D curved OLED HDR display with a 3,120 x 1,440-pixel resolution and a 19:5.9 aspect ratio. It has an in-screen Fingerprint Sensor that will light up to show you where it is when you hover your finger over the area or when you wake up the screen.

The Mate 20 Pro features three colors: Emerald Green, Twilight (featured here), and Black. The rear of the phone has a curved glass design as well to facilitate wireless charging. The Mate 20 Pro supports one of the industry's highest capacity wireless charging at up to 15W using the Huawei CP60 Fast Wireless Charger. The Mate 20 Pro also supports reverse wireless charging, and the phone can functions a charging pad for other devices.

Emerald Green is the new hero color for the Mate 20 Pro, which is also the only color to feature a special textured back that's etched into the glass. Huawei calls this Hyper Optical Multi Pattern. It offers an improved grip and a glazed glass look.

The Mate 20 Pro sports a triple camera design that comprises a wide 40MP f/1.8, an ultra-wide 20MP f/2.2, and an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto. This main sensor can shoot in full 40MP mode or enhanced 10MP through pixel binning. The second sensor replaces the monochrome sensor design from older models like the P20 Pro in favor of an ultra-wide angle camera capable of very close up macro shots and a 16mm equivalent field-of-view. As usual for flagship devices, Huawei partnered with Leica for the camera design.

6/17

The Mate 20 Pro's front camera is a 24MP f/2.0 shooter. However, the phone now features a new dot projector and flood illuminator for enhanced, and more secure 3D Face Unlock. Huawei claims the new setup will be able to unlock the phone in just 0.5 seconds.

With the power of the new Kirin 980 chipset and improved Dual NPU for image recognition. The Mate 20 Pro's cameras feature AI-assisted HiVision object recognition technology as well as enhanced photography modes. You can check out our HiVision preview here.

The Mate 20 Pro is a full glass device, curved on the front and back around a metal frame in the middle. This design is reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy S9 series. However, the Mate 20 Pro feels smoother, with more seamless joints where glass and frame meet. It also has a thinner frame, but as a result, very thin buttons.

9/17

The Mate 20 Pro is sealed all around and is the first Huawei device to be rated IP68 dust and water resistant. It has only a single open USB-C port at the bottom, which also houses a hidden bottom speaker, which is why you don't see any speaker grills at the bottom of the phone. The Mate 20 Pro also supports a massive 40W SuperCharge quick charge technology when used with its bundled power adapter. Huawei claims 70% battery life in just 30 minutes of charging.

10/17

One of the more controversial moves, the Mate 20 Pro features a dual-sided nano SIM tray with one side that can be used for expandable memory. However, since there are no commercial standards for memory cards that fit the nano SIM dimensions, Huawei created their own nano memory card. A 128GB nano memory card has a recommended retail price of S$108. Huawei has stated that they would be providing an adapter so you can use the card in other devices.

11/17

The Mate 20 is a very different beast from the Mate 20 Pro. It features the same Kirin 980 chipset, 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. It also ships with Android 9.0 and EMUI 9. But, that's as far as the similarities go. The Mate 20 has a larger 6.53-inch screen. However, it is an IPS LCD display, with a lower 2,244 x 1,080-pixel resolution and an 18:7.9 aspect ratio. It does not feature an in-screen fingerprint sensor.

The Mate 20 is 158.2 (H) x 77.2 (L) x 8.3 (W) mm, and weighs 188g.

12/17

The Mate 20 doesn't have a traditional rectangular notch in the display, but there is still a camera notch. Huawei calls this a 'Dewdrop Display'. The front camera is as 24MP f/2.0 shooter too, but there are no other sensors here, so the Mate 20 also does not feature the advanced 3D Face Unlock function of the Mate 20 Pro.

13/17

The Mate 20 comes in two colors: Midnight Blue, and Black. The Midnight Blue color will also feature the same Hyper Optical Multi Pattern as the Mate 20 Pro. However, the Mate 20 does not feature any wireless charging technology. Also, since it doesn't have an in-screen fingerprint sensor, you can find a traditional finger print sensor at the back of the phone beneath the camera setup.

14/17

While the Mate 20 has the same huge camera bump at the back and a similar triple camera setup, sensor performance has been reduced. Instead of a 40MP+20MP+8MP setup on the Mate 20 Pro, Here, the primary sensor is a wide 12MP f/1.8, ultra-wide 16MP f/2.2, and a telephoto 8MP f/2.4. However, since the phone runs on the same flagship chipset, it retains all the HiVision and AI photography functions like its bigger brother.

15/17

The Mate 20 doesn't have an invisible bottom speaker like the Mate 20 Pro, and features a more standard speaker grill at the bottom. This phone also does NOT feature any dust or water resistance. So, do not try to dunk the Mate 20 in water.

While the Mate 20 features SuperCharge technology, it can only support a maximum 22.5W charge. The Mate 20 also comes with a slightly smaller 4,000mAh battery, as opposed to 4,200mAh on the Mate 20 Pro.

16/17

Interestingly, the Mate 20 has a 3.5mm headphone jack located at the top of the phone. The Mate 20 Pro does not feature one, but it does still come bundled with a USB-C converter.

17/17

Because the Mate 20 has only a very shallow curve on the edges, the side frame is large enough to accommodate other ports and slots. You'll find the Mate 20's SIM tray to be located on the left of the phone instead of the bottom like the Mate 20 Pro.
