Apps Across Multiple Devices

Samsung takes apps one step further with their Samsung Apps, a new application platform that enables content owners and developers to create applications that work across multiple devices, with the aim being a more consistent and intuitive experience. In short, users will be able to download and purchase applications from select Samsung HDTVs launched in 2010, Blu-ray players and Home Theater systems via an upgraded Internet@TV content service.

Samsung Apps will also work on the company's range of mobile devices, aptly dubbed Samsung Apps Mobile. Already launched in England, France, Italy, and Korea, Samsung Apps Mobile will expand to approximately 50 countries worldwide in 2010.

The first batch of TV apps will launch in Spring 2010 free of charge, while a set of premium apps will be made available to purchase later in Summer 2010. Content partners for Samsung Apps will include AccuWeather.com, The Associated Press, Blockbuster, Fashion TV, Netflix, Picasa, Pandora, Rovi, Travel Channel, Twitter, USA TODAY, and Vudu.

To create the apps that will eventually populate Samsung Apps, you need developers. As such, Samsung will be making available a Samsung Apps Software Developers Kit (SDK), with the developers program being an open platform for everyone including premium content owners and individual developers to create apps to distribute and sell. With such a wide range of devices, ranging from 55-inch HDTVs to mobile devices with 3-inch screens, we imagine the developer community and Samsung will have quite a bit of work on their hands to make the idea of unified apps a workable reality.
