A Brave New Blackberry World
It's barely three months since CommunicAsia 2008 ended with the introduction of a slew of devices, and we found ourselves facing another torrent of devices coming our way in the coming weeks. Coincidentally, it's really sort of a trinity, with three devices running on three different operating systems (OS), being unveiled on the same day, namely the Blackberry Bold, the Nokia N96 and the HTC Touch Pro. While the iPhone 3G just received its regal fanfare during its midnight launch , there are some who won't be biting into the Apple device just yet. We did cover the Blackberry Bold and Nokia N96 as some of the iPhone 3G alternatives (sans the HTC Touch Pro which wasn't on our radar back then), and it is due time that we revealed more about these upcoming devices in this preview.
After a decade of serving the corporate executives with its business solution under the Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES), Research in Motion (RIM) have finally hit a jackpot as they move onwards to what everyone else has been doing: convergence. The Blackberry 9000, or more well known as the Blackberry Bold, has done what its predecessors have not in the past few years, and that, is the hype it enjoyed over the past few months when the first images of its sleek black design was leaked on the web.
The great mobile device galore was kick started in the morning of the 26th of August, over at Raffles Hotel when the Blackberry Bold was revealed to the Singapore media. Needless to say, it is one of the most highly anticipated device under the Blackberry branding through the years, not only for its departure from its more identifiable silver and gray hue, but also for its slew of connectivity options and brand new interface on its proprietary OS. And that's not all. Remembering that the Bold is going for the convergence approach, there's also an integrated GPS within the device, and preloaded with Blackberry Maps for your navigation needs. On the multimedia aspect, it's business as usual with a 2-megapixel camera, but like most other upcoming devices, music and video support is significantly increased with the inclusion of the DivX and Xvid format into the list.
For the Blackberry enthusiasts, be patient as the Blackberry Bold will be heading to Singapore by the mid of September, and your guess is as good as ours when it comes to the retail pricing of the Blackberry Bold, but with the competitive pricing from the three local telcos, be on the lookout for a reasonable and affordable price tagged to the device that is both business and pleasure melded as a single entity.
