Game of the Year: Tech Awards 2023 Editor's Choice series
Putting together a list of the best games of the year is always an incredibly difficult task. There are so many titles to consider for the different genres and platforms - and most turn out to be great in their own ways. 2022 proved to be a great year for PC and consoles gamers alike, bringing us masterpieces like Horizon: Forbidden West and Elden Ring.
TL; DR: there were many, many games that we loved playing, and finding our game of the year was no easy task. We went through and re-evaluated them on every possible criterion – gameplay, visual fidelity, audio design and most importantly, the fun factor. That narrowed down our 10 best from options from 2022, to these critical nominees:-
Nominees
- Elden Ring (PC, PS5 and Xbox)
- Horizon: Forbidden West (PS5)
- God of War: Ragnarok (PS5)
And the winner is…
You know when a game is going to be the top title of the year when companies mandate off days so employees can play the game on launch day. An open-world game that was crafted in collaboration with George R. R. Martin of Game of Thrones fame, Elden Ring is a visually stunning title with solid, Dark Souls-inspired gameplay to match.
Set in the realm of the Lands Between, players can choose their character class at the beginning of the game, and are then free to explore the world, uncovering its lore and secrets. Like Dark Souls, Elden Ring is known for its highly challenging difficulty. But tweaks made to the gameplay mechanics have made this Game of the Year title more accessible for most players. If adventure is what you are looking for, then you can’t go wrong with the dark fantasy world of Elden Ring.
