Class is in session with Canon's newest products.
Two New Canon DSLR Cameras Join the Class
As soon as the bell rung we were treated to the latest additions to Canon's DSLR cameras. Joining the class are the EOS 600D and the 1100D. The EOS 1100D is the successor to the entry-level 1000D DSLR camera which was released back in 2008, while the 600D is an upgrade to the 550D which was released last year (it's not quite the replacement according to a spokesman, but will exist side by side with the 550D).
Both the 600D and the 1100D come with Basic+, a new feature designed to help users take better-looking pictures, with settings in plain English like 'warm', 'soft' or 'vivid'. Also new to both cameras is Feature Guide, which offers simple descriptions with all functions and settings to help educate users on how to use them.
The Canon EOS 600D also comes with the new 'Scene Intelligent Auto' which determines the type of scene you're taking and applies an appropriate scene setting - you could be shooting a portrait for example, and the 600D goes to a Portrait scene setting which helps to smoothen the skin tones.
The 600D records full 1920 x 1080 HD video, with a new vari-angle LCD monitor to help you shoot from more creative angles. The 1100D shoots video at 1280 x 720.
The Canon EOS 600D is available from 10th March, and the EOS 1100D will be arriving in late March.

New IXUS and PowerShot Compact Cameras
Eight new compact digital cameras join the Canon family in its spring launch - three in the stylish IXUS range and five in the popular PowerShot series.
Up to eight new Canon compacts were introduced.
The highlights of the show have to be the IXUS 310 HS and the PowerShot SX 230 HS. Both are powerhouse models, focused on performance and quality, boasting features like Canon's HS (High-Sensitivity) System and full HD video recording. The PowerShot SX 230 also includes GPS.
The good-looking IXUS 310 HS is the follow-up to the IXUS 300 HS and it comes with a fast F2.0 wide aperture lens which lets you capture more light in low-light situations. Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority modes have been added to the IXUS 310 HS, giving the manual photographer more latitude for creative shooting with a compact camera body.
The IXUS 310 HS looks good in metallic silver, doesn't it?
The PowerShot SX230 HS comes in hot pink too. One for the ladies?
The PowerShot SX 230 HS comes with a 14x telephoto lens, which is the 35mm equivalent of 28mm to 392mm. With built-in GPS, the camera auto-tags the location information to the meta-data of the image, so you'll always know where you took them.
All the new eight compact cameras record full 1920 x 1080 HD video, with a new Movie Digest feature which gives you a one-click still and four-second movie recording which is captured before the still image.
Besides the two key models, the other new compact cameras include the PowerShot A3300 IS, A3200 IS, A2200, A1200, IXUS 220 HS and the IXUS 115 HS. All the models are launching in March, with the IXUS 310 HS and PowerShot SX 230 HS expected in late March.
Eight New LEGRIA Camcorders
Eight seems to be Canon's lucky number as it is launching not just eight new compact cameras but also eight new LEGRIA camcorders. Included in the launch are the flagship HF G10, the higher-end HF S30, two compact HF M models, the M41 and M400, two entry-level R models, the HF R28 and R26, and two standard definition FS models, the FS46 and FS406.
Better pay attention, class, or you're going to get detention!
What's of particular interest is the new HD CMOS Pro Image Sensor found in the LEGRIA HF G10, M41 and M400 models. It promises high video resolution, outstanding low-light performance and an expanded dynamic range.
Also of interest is the 30.4mm wide-angle video lens on the HF G10 which has a fast aperture of F1.8. This flagship model also includes a manual-focus ring for dedicated control, 32GB of internal flash memory and dual SDXC-compatible card slots for expanded memory and instant back-up.
Wide-angle and a fast aperture. What more can you ask for?
A New Portable Professional Camcorder - the XA10
What really caught our eye was the XA10, a brand-new portable professional camcorder series which brings the power of professional imaging and controls into a compact consumer camcorder body.
Designed for videographers looking for outstanding performance in a mobile body, the XA10 records full 1080p HD video, the DIGIC DV III Image Processor, a professional-grade 1/3" 2.37MP HD CMOS Pro image sensor and a Canon HD Video Lens which produces "supremely sharp" HD images. It brings 10x optical zoom, a 30.4mm wide-angle and maximum F1.8 aperture, with a 2x digital extender for additional reach. The XA10 also works with the new WD-H58W wide adapter, existing 58mm adapters and filters.
It records AVCHD at up to 24Mbps, the maximum bit-rate now possible with the standard. The 8.8cm. 922k-dot LCD is touch-screen, and embedded in the detachable handle are XLR terminal inputs, audio switches, an infrared (IR) lamp for night-time footage, tally lamp, removable microphone holder, zoom and record switches and a 'cold' shoe, giving videographers more to work with than a traditional consumer camcorder body.
There's 64GB of internal memory on the XA10, and it has two SDXC-compatible memory card slots to expand memory. Relay Recording automatically switches between memory cards when one is full, while Double Slot Recording writes the same footage to two cards at the same time.
The Canon XA10 will be available from April onwards, with pricing to be announced.

Go to Class at the New Canon Imaging Academy
We're not the only ones who can go to school with Canon. Besides the new products launched, Canon is also opening a new training facility - the CIA. No, not the Central Intelligence Agency, but the Canon Imaging Academy, located at 1 HarbourFront Avenue.
At launch, the CIA already has over 70 photography courses, 20 local outings, 10 overseas trips, and free product trainings in the works. Courses planned for 2011 include basic photography, intermediate photography, strobist, studio lighting, creative photography and editing. Videography courses will also be available for budding movie-makers. You can visit www.canon.com.sg/training for more info.
