Asus Unveils the Transformer Book T100

Not long after the announcement of Intel's next generation Atom Z3000 series, Asus wasted no time with the unveiling of their latest 2-in-1 device based on the same new processor. At a side event held at Intercontinental Hotel just less than a block away from IDF, Asus chairman Jonney Shih took the stage to reveal their latest 2-in-1 device.

Explaining why the new device will be a mobility lifestyle game changer, Mr. Shih described how their popular low-cost EeePC has perfectly transformed into what is now known as the Asus Transformer Book T100. The new 2-in-1 device features a detachable touch screen that allows you to work on it in laptop mode or to use it as a consumption device in tablet mode.

The Transformer Book T100 features a 10.1-inch touch screen and it comes with Intel's quad-core 'Bay Trail' processor. The HD screen comes in the standard 1366 x 768 resolution and the entire device weighs no more than 1.07kg. When detached in tablet mode, the 'transformed' 10.1-inch tablet weighs only a mere 550g, which is lighter than most tablets of that size.

In terms of power consumption, the Transformer Book T100 is expected to last up to 11 hours under normal usage. It will be shipped with the latest Windows 8.1 operating system and Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013. Asus will be shipping the device from 18 October in the US (which also happens to be the release date for Windows 8.1). Together with the new operating system and the bundled office software, the 32GB version of the Transformer Book T100 is surprisingly affordable, costing only US$349 while the 64GB version will cost US$399. Both versions will also include a free one year subscription to the unlimited Asus WebStorage plan.

From left: Windows Home button, volume switch and power button. It's quite unconventional to have the home button located on the left flank of the tablet as most Windows tablet have the home button located on the bottom center of the screen.

The thickness of the base and tablet are about the same. Also, the USB 3.0 port is located on the base of the device.
