AMD IGP Chipset and Motherboard Showdown

By Vincent Chang - 6 Dec 2008

Temperature & Power Consumption

Temperature

We measured the temperatures of the heatsinks on these motherboards to gauge how warm they felt at peak (3DMark06 looped). The two AMD chipsets were much cooler than their NVIDIA counterparts and with heat a major factor for cramped, small chassis like those used for HTPCs, this is an advantage for them.

Power Consumption

All these boards fared well for power consumption, with their idle power draw among the lowest we have seen. After all, this is one of the main draws of IGP boards and even at peak, the figures were decent. AMD however again had the edge here, with its chipsets drawing significantly less power at both idle and peak.
