5 things we like about LG’s new washing machines

Let’s talk about washing machines

If you’re a geek, chances are you care about how your geek obsession works and looks. It could be anything — PC rigs, smartphones or cameras. Well, why don’t we geeks apply the same obsession over to our home appliances? I like well-designed home appliances that look and work well, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. Steve Jobs apparently agonized for two weeks over which washing machine to get. Now that’s geeky.

Over the past week, I visited LG Home & Appliances’ offices and factories, and learned more about washing machines than I thought I’d ever know. Here are five things about them that I actually like.

1. Wash away the allergens

If you have a sensitive nose like me, LG’s Allergy Care wash might be for you. The WFT1571DD is a top load washer that features a Warm Wash function, which lets you choose either warm or cold water for washing.

If you choose Stain Care or Whitening Course, the WFT1571DD uses 40°C water to wash the clothes. If you choose the Allergy Care course, 60°C warm water will be used. LG says that the higher temperature results in a 95 percent increase in removal of allergens, including dust mites, pollen and pet fur.

2. Gentle on your clothes

My wife’s hand washed clothes always last longer than my machine washed ones. Hopefully LG’s 6 Motion Wash Direct Drive will even the score. The feature combines six different motions which emulating hand-washing techniques, and customizes performance for different fabric types. LG says that the powerful washing performance is still “gentle on the fabrics.” Nice.

3. Self-cleaning features for a cleaner washing machine

How about a washing machine that washes itself? I don’t know about you, but my washing machine gets funky from time to time and I have to clean it myself with some cloth and water. LG’s WFT1571DD has a full stainless steel tub with a Tub Clean feature that can clean itself and sterilize the tub up to 99.99%. An Auto Lint Clean System removes lint during the drain cycle of each wash.

4. Steam cleaning for deep cleaning

How does getting a deep clean in 20 minutes sound? LG’’s WD-1410TS and WD-1628RDS come with TrueSteam technology, which uses steam instead of water to clean your clothes. By injecting steam into the drum for 20 minutes, the Steam Softener cleans, removes wrinkles and odors, resulting in softer laundry. It’s suitable for delicate clothes, and also works to eliminate allergens and mites.

5. Future-proofing with NFC updates

We use a single washing machine for a very long time, and LG’s NFC connected washing machines provide some future-proofing for these long-term devices. With an NFC-enabled smart device and LG’s app, you can download new washing protocols to your LG NFC-enabled washing machine as they’re made available.

Look for that ‘Tag On’ icon, which indicates NFC connectivity.

Android only for now, through no particular preference from LG. iPhones’ NFC connectivity is locked from developers for security reasons, due to it being used for Apple Pay.

Wait a minute, what’s this?

You can’t walk away from a conversation about LG’s latest washing machines without mentioning the Twin Wash System, which combines two washing machines into one.

I first saw the Twin Wash earlier this year, and it’s completely unlike any washing machine you’ve seen before (well, unless you stack a couple of them at home, I guess).

When I first saw one, the question out of my lips was “why?”, but then again I realized how having a second washer can be helpful at times. The mini washer is built for delicate items that require different wash settings, and it can also be used for clothes that need to be separated from the rest, like white clothes from colored clothes, and especially dirty clothes from normal ones. With two washers instead of one, you won’t need double the time to clean the same amount.

The Twin Wash will be available in Singapore sometime in Q2 of 2016.

Yes … this is a washing machine selfie.
