Brace yourself for more movie delays.
Paramount Pictures have delayed its entire 2021 slate of movies, including highly-anticipated blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick. The Tom Cruise-led sequel has been delayed from 19 November, 2021 to 27 May, 2022. The movie has now been delayed six times since its original 2019 release date.
Paramount is also pushing Jackass Forever from 22 October, 2021 to 4 February, 2022. Another Tom Cruise movie is getting delayed as well: Mission Impossible 7. The action movie is moving to 30 September, 2022, due to Top Gun taking its previous May 2022 release date. Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters: Afterlife is also moving into Top Gun: Maverick’s old release date on 19 November, 2021 - meaning that it’s been delayed by one week.
To sum up:
- Ghostbusters: Afterlife - 19 November, 2021
- Jackass Forever - 4 February, 2022
- Top Gun: Maverick - 27 May, 2022
- Mission Impossible 7 - 30 September, 2022
These are a lot of shifting release dates to keep track of, but Deadline attributes this to Paramount thinking their movies might perform better in the next year. Deadline reports that these delays were also due to, “the current conditions of COVID and its Delta variant around the world.” Paramount reportedly consulted with, “experts and their own global team,” before making the delays. Theaters in many regions worldwide are still shut down due to the pandemic, while other regions are experiencing new spikes in Covid-19 cases.
Several other studios are still sticking with their 2021 slates, however. Sony Pictures plans to release Venom: Let There Be Carnage on 18 October despite rumours swirling of an incoming delay, and then Spider-Man: No Way Home in December. Warner Bros. Pictures has two blockbusters planned for later in the year: Dune on 22 October and The Matrix: Resurrections on 22 December. Universal Pictures is finally putting out No Time to Die this very month. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is also hitting theaters this week.
Will more of these movies get delayed out of 2021? Time will tell.
