Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984 are being delayed

Fortunately, the delays don't push back their theatrical releases by too long.

The coronavirus pandemic is continuing to disrupt theatrical releases. Warner Bros. has said that it will be pushing back the release of Christopher Nolan's Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984, both of them some of the most highly anticipated movies of the year.

Fortunately, both of them look like they'll still be dropping in 2020. Tenet, an espionage thriller starring  Robert Pattinson and John David Washington, is seeing just a slight two-week delay, moving back from 17 July to 31 July. In its place, theatres will hold screenings of Inception, one of Nolan's most popular and iconic films, to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

Meanwhile, Wonder Woman 1984 is seeing a bigger delay. It is now expected to debut on 2 October, instead of 14 August as originally planned. This is the second delay for the Gal Gadot-helmed film, which was originally expected to hit theatres on 5 June.

The hope was that Tenet would mark the start of audiences return to cinemas, which have been mostly shuttered across the US since the middle of March as part of lockdown measures to combat the spread of Covid-19. That said, even as cinemas start to reopen, it remains to be seen whether moviegoers will follow.

Another major film is expected to debut in July as well. Disney's live-action remake of Mulan is currently scheduled for release on 24 July, and that may serve as an early indicator for whether people will still flock to see the latest blockbusters. Hollywood will be watching Mulan closely, as major studios try to get a handle on public sentiment and figure out what it will mean for their bottom line.

Meanwhile, other studios have opted to delay their blockbuster releases into 2021. For instance, Universal has said that F9, the ninth film in the Fast and Furious franchise, will only debut in April 2021.
