Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the fastest movie to take in US$1 billion at the box office. It achieved the feat in a record-breaking 12 days.

It dethroned the previous record holder, Jurassic World, which took in US$1 billion in 13 days.

More impressively, Jurassic World had the benefit of the massive China market, while The Force Awakens has yet to open in China. It only opens in China on 9 January.

Another interesting statistic is that The Force Awakens took half the time to hit US$1 billion as compared to Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron, one of the biggest hits of 2015.

The latest Star Wars flick has already made over US$544 million in the U.S. and is currently the fifth highest grossing movie in U.S. box office history.

It seems that it is only a matter of time before The Force Awakens overtakes Avatar as the highest grossing film of all time.
