The new Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim movie will be an animated film, created in anime form.

Produced by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation, the anime will be spearheaded by Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner) as its director and will feature Brian Cox and Gaia Wise. The two will be voicing the King of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand and his daughter, Hera respectively.

War of the Rohirrim is set 183 years before the events as seen in Peter Jackson's original trilogy, and tells the story of king Helm Hammerhand of Rohan and his last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg against the Dunlending lord who is seeking vengeance for the death of his father. Fans of LOTR will know that Hornburg is of course, Helm's Deep (and seen in the final battle in The Two Towers movie).

The anime looks to expand on lesser-known aspects of the LOTR lore and has a particular focus on Helm’s daughter, Hera. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, producer Phillipa Boyens was interested in knowing more about the unnamed daughter that Helm had, and wanted to dive deeper into knowing who she was and how she lived. Phillipa also said that she immediately felt that it would work as an anime as her movie was more character-based and was also contained within its own world, rather than Middle-earth at large.

Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will release in theatres on 13 December in the United States. No release date has been announced for Singapore yet.
