By now, you must have heard of the popular but divisive Studio Ghibli AI filter, which came out of the labs of OpenAI and has since been adopted by multiple AI image generators. But while that's trending, with people eager to use and give their takes on it, it's attracted renewed attention to the animation studio.
Which is just in time, as Singapore will see Ghibli-related music programmes brought to its shores this year.
Apart from being renowned for its distinctive art style and compelling stories, Studio Ghibli also has a strong repertoire of music from its film soundtracks. And you'll soon be able to hear them not just in concert, but also performed by their original artists, in The Music of STUDIO GHIBLI – Original Singers Symphony, coming to Singapore in June.
The concert is a one-night-only event that features music from Studio Ghibli's classics like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and Princess Mononoke, sung by their original artists:
- Yoshikazu Mera, who performed the theme of Princess Mononoke,
- Sumi Shimamoto, the voice of Nausicaä, who also voice acted in Princess Mononoke and The Castle of Cagliostro,
- Azumi Inoue, who sang the themes for My Neighbour Totoro and the ending of Laputa: Castle in the Sky,
- Yuyu, the daughter of Azumi Inoue and singer who had a successful debut on NHK's Minna no Uta music variety programme.
The artists are supported by the Tokyo Asia Orchestra, a 17-member ensemble lead by Takeshi Hashima.
The Music of STUDIO GHIBLI – Original Singers Symphony will come to Singapore on 11 June (Wednesday), 8pm at The Star Theatre. Tickets aren't available yet, but you can stay tuned on the concert's webpage here. The concert is currently touring Hong Kong and Macau, and will also visit Jakarta on 8 June.
If this concert grabs your attention, you might also be interested in Joe Hisaishi's The Harp, Heron and Firebird concert. Conducted by Hisaishi himself and performed by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the concert will take place at the Esplanade Concert Hall on 3-4 July, and will feature works from Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron, along with Hisaishi's own Harp Concerto and orchestral pieces from the likes of Igor Stravinsky and Arturo Márquez.
