Break Portal launches VPN service, now possible to stream Netflix over 4G
Break Portal has launched a new Virtual Private Network (VPN) service to allow subscribers to stream geo-blocked websites like Netflix over a 3G/4G cellular network connection. It also offers all the benefits associated with a VPN service, like stronger encryption and online anonymity.

Remember Break Portal, the DNS routing service that let you easily circumvent geo-blocked video streaming websites like Netflix and Hulu? The company has now gone live with a new Virtual Private Network (VPN) service, which allows customers to access geo-blocked websites on devices connected via 3G/4G cellular networks.
The new VPN service will complement its existing DNS routing service, so subscribers will be able to stream videos both at home and on their commute. While DNS routing is great because of the lack of a speed penalty, a VPN service confers benefits like robust encryption and anonymity.
Its uses extend beyond the fairly mundane task of catching up with your favorite TV series. If you’re dealing with something sensitive like a bank transaction, a VPN connection can encrypt the entire connection and make it more difficult for hackers to access your information. It’ll also shield you from being the unwitting victim of snooping from network administrators or service providers that want to track your viewing habits.
Break Portal subscribers will have access to three VPN protocols – L2TP/IPsec, OpenVPN and SoftEther. Each of these have varying strengths, so users can pick the one that best suits their current needs. For instance, SoftEther has the strongest encryption and the fastest speed, but it’s only compatible with Windows. On the other hand, L2TP offers a lower encryption standard, but it’s easy to set up and will work on Windows, OS X, iOS and Android.
Break Portal VPN will cost S$9.90 per month, compared to S$4.99 for Break Portal DNS. The VPN service includes Break Portal DNS, so there’s no need to subscribe separately to both. A one-week free trial is also available, and Break Portal is imposing no bandwidth limits with its VPN subscription.
