The year’s almost over!
It’s December, and you know what that means - endless loops of Christmas music on the radio. On streaming services, most festive titles are already out and ready to be binged by now - but there’s plenty more on its way! Whether you want to see how Sabrina’s witchy adventures end, or you just want to relive some childhood nostalgia with The Hardy Boys… there’s actually a lot here to watch. Wow. Thank goodness it’s the holidays, right?
And hey, this is your last chance to catch up on shows before 2020 ends, so make the most of it!
The Holiday Movies That Made Us (December 1) - Netflix

Let’s crack December open with something festive. Netflix is releasing two special episodes of The Movies That Made Us covering two Christmas classics: Elf and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Some of us probably grew up with these two, and The Holiday Movies That Made Us is a chance to dive into how they came to be - and how they almost weren’t released at all!
Alien Worlds (December 2) - Netflix

Now we enter the cosmos. This series looks at outer space and discusses the inevitability of us finding out that there is life outside Earth. But how would that life take form? By applying the laws of life on this planet to the rest of the galaxy, Alien Worlds tries to imagine what alien life on other planets might look like. You know, maybe the PlayStation 5 is still in stock somewhere out there. Imagine that.
Mank (December 4) - Netflix

David Fincher (Mindhunter, The Social Network) returns to Netflix with this black-and-white biographical drama! Mank follows the life of Herman J. Mankiewicz as he goes about writing Citizen Kane. It also covers the problems that came up with Orson Welles and the movie’s production. The movie’s got a great cast, too; Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Tom Pelphrey, Charles Dance and more star.
Pokemon Journeys: The Series - Part 3 (December 4) - Netflix

A new batch of episodes from Pokemon Journeys is on its way! This new Pokemon anime breaks out of series tradition by taking Ash Ketchum, Pikachu and new companion Goh on a globetrotting adventure across all eight regions of the Pokemon universe. This of course, includes Pokemon Sword and Shield’s Galar region too. It's a great chance to hop back into Pokemon and watch Ash visit your favourite locations from previous Pokemon games.
The Hardy Boys (December 4) - Hulu

While I was compiling shows for this list, I did a double-take. A new Hardy Boys show? What?
Frank and Joe Hardy move to Bridgeport, where they set out to unravel a sprawling mystery related to a recent family tragedy. While doing so however, they uncover something much more sinister at play. I loved The Hardy Boys books when I was a kid, and while this looks a bit different (there’s a way bigger age difference between the boys now), it still looks like a fun mystery to solve!
The Prom (December 10) - Netflix

Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, Ratched) tends to take on big projects, and this looks no different. The Prom is a musical comedy following two New York City stage stars whose latest Broadway show turns out to be a huge flop. When a crisis erupts in small-town Indiana however, the two embark on a road trip to resuscitate their carers - which does not go quite as planned. Meryl Streep, James Corden, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells, Kerry Washington and more star.
The Midnight Sky (December 23) - Netflix

Directed by and starring George Clooney, this movie is an adaptation of the critically acclaimed book Good Morning, Midnight. The post-apocalyptic story follows a lonely scientist in the Arctic (Clooney), as he races against time to stop Sully (Felicity Jones) and her fellow astronauts from returning to Earth. The planet has been ravaged by a mysterious global catastrophe, and there might not be anything to come back to. The movie co-stars David Oyelowo, Kyle Chandler, Demián Bichir and Tiffany Boone.
Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy Chapter 2: Earthrise (December 30) - Netflix

Transformers is back! Chapter 2 of this prequel to the original Transformers animated series sees Optimus Prime and his band of Autobots in the depths of space. A new faction called the ‘Mercenaries’ is introduced, and the ‘bots quest to meet their creators. Sounds great, right? Well, not if those creators turn out to be worse than the Decepticons.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - Final Season (December 31) - Netflix

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is ending this year - due to an extremely sudden cancellation from Netflix. Still, at least we’re getting eight more episodes to hopefully wrap things up. The supernatural drama’s final run sees the Eldritch Terrors descend upon Greendale, and the Coven has to fight each terrifying threat one-by-one. At the end of it all lies the Void, the End of All Things. In the meantime, Nick begins to slowly earn his way into Sabrina’s heart - which is weirdly still a priority in these apocalyptic times.
Doctor Who: Revolution of the Daleks (TBC December) - BBC First

Now we’re cooking with gas! Doctor Who’s next season is a long ways off, but we're still getting a Christmas special with Daleks. Last time we saw the Doctor, she’d just learned an absolutely world-shattering secret about her origins, before being imprisoned by the Judoon. Her companions are now separated from their friend, and resolve to get her back. Throw in redesigned Daleks, a prison breakout and the long-awaited return of Torchwood’s Jack Harkness, and you’ve got quite an eventful episode brewing!
